With Decipher’s intentions to try and recruit 6000 Founding Mentors, I have to wonder what kind of repercussions exist if they don’t meet this highly ambitious goal.
What do you guys think about it?
Cheers, -Matt

Interesting thought. I would assume that they want to proceed, but maybe there is a minimum they want to get in order to proceed.

I’m still not sold on DnD 4.0, but with the average lifespan of all non-MMO games not being more than a few years, I’d have to agree here…we need to see a heck of a lot more info before we can make such a judgement though.

They can build the greatest support group in the world but if the product is no good, the group will dissipate… need to see the game first…

Gaming in general will not die with the advent of 4.0 or MMOs. There are just too many varying tastes among gamers. Go to your local game store, and you will most likely find people playing any number of games from minis, to cards, to roleplaying, to LAN, to MMO, etc…
The primary impetus of the gamer is to find something that captivates his interest. As long as this is the case, there will always be a market for more than just the ‘big dogs’.

I must agree with cofeeandgames. If the game is no good it will not work. Also a succes of many ccg’s seems to be the tournament scene. I am curious how that will develop.

The problem isn’t the gaming tastes, it’s the “going with what works”. Unfortunately, everyone and their mother puts together these small-term games and while a blast at first, get old quickly.
That’s why you have games like Initial D or LotR that just couldn’t handle the test of time, while others such as Magic, Warhammer, etc. are still going strong. In that same aspect, this particular program better not try to take on more than it can initially, or else we’ll have some serious trouble!

I dunno, when I walk into the game stores in the area I see…people playing Magic, yes, and then everyone else playing minis. The entire store is dedicated to minis and board games…with a tiny tiny two shelves for four different card games. A lot of what they have being HEAVILY discounted to try to be rid of it. The next store…exactly the same thing actually, although devoted to comic books more. And the third? Again, exact same thing. Card games are definitely on a downhill slope. I can’t think of the last game that really lasted more than a few sets.

<<they good world no but build product in can the if greatest support group is>>
Very true. How fun the game is to play is more important than the number of mentors that sign up.
Decipher has made lots of fun games in the past, so I think this one deserves a fair chance.

Actually… I’m thinking that by the time 30 days rolls by, we might be in competition for those slots… but I’ve been wrong in the past… once or twice…

No telling. I know some of the people that are complaining in the comments out front are also registering. So who knows?

I also think that 6K isn’t that big of a crowd to start this game. Remember that it’s 6K from more than 6 billion in the world!
We have almost 500 people registered in less than a day. I believe they can surely make way more than 6K till the end of April.

Yes, the frenzy these last two days is truly impressive. But will it last like this for a whole month? I think they need to nudge people along with previews (hint hint). At this rate, 6,000 is really a small number. But…

Guys, I’m a professional sales man. No really that’s how I make my living. If the 500 people who are already posting can’t turn this thing into 6000 within thirty days then we have no business applying to be Founding Mentors.

^^ True, it should happen, but without an actual game to look at, people might be a little wary to begin recruiting actively at this point. Plus, the incentive system hasn’t been activated yet.

Trade on history. WotC has been publishing the same game for 15 years. And it hasn’t changed. Decipher created a stronger engine and SWCCG is still being played despite the fact that they stopped publishing it for seven or eight years. Get you old SW, ST, or LOTR crew excited about it. Promise them innovation, a chance to get in on the ground floor and we can pick ‘em up.

Decipher really does have a superior product to WOTC, at least they have up to this point. If FK is half as good as Decipher’s previous work, this game just needs a little bit work from us to get started.

6k shouldn’t be hard to do in all seriousness. It’s a well rounded number for getting a game started!

I was just sitting here thinking that 6000 seems really high to start with. Not that it can’t be done, but I don’t see it. For starters, the Dagent number list only goes up to 715 and that was for all games through April 2005. Now there were a lot that came and went before dagent numbers even came out, but I’d be willing to bet Decipher hasn’t had 6000 TOTAL product champions / volunteers going back to the early days of Star Wars & Star Trek. Second, just that number of applications seems daunting. Assuming Kendrick is the one doing the screening, just to look at 6000 applications will take 30 days reading 25 an hour 8 hours a day. One application every two and a half minutes of every day for 30 days? I’d be ready to gouge my eyes out with a spoon. And finally, there is the problem of holding out. We don’t have all the details yet but it seems that as of right now, you tell everybody you know to become a founding mentor and you get 0% for it. How many people are just making their list and waiting until they can become a founding mentor and actually cash in on their referrals? Unfortunately, I have a feeling that to start with and for several months after, just about everybody that plays will be a founding mentor.

6000 in 30 days I think is a bit high, we have 880 users on the boards (that does not mean each one actually filled out the survey). Also the amount of new users is slowing. For the 6000 mark Decipher will need to about 197 new Users who fill out the form each day from now until the end of the countdown.

I’m no marketing pro, but I would think that around 200 a day wouldn’t be so bad considering the opening numbers. It would make sense to have a large number in the first day or two (nearly 1000 or so); then a slowdown after all those who signed up initially are accounted for; then (hopefully) a gradual increase as word spreads.
Also, is there really a big deal if 6000 is reached? If it’s not in the first month, its not like it wouldn’t a few days later necessarily. Hopefully 6000 is not a threshold number or anything like that required for decipher to continue on.
A game with good dynamics and with the premise of an unlimited number of licensing possibilities should make it pretty easy for all of us to spread the game accordingly.
